This page describes what actually happens when you use My Address IP. We have tried to describe the site's real behaviour rather than make broad reassurances, including the one place where we do process something derived from your IP address.
What we process
To show you your IP address, we have to receive it. Your browser opens a connection to our server, and the server sees the address that connection came from. That address is used to build the page you asked for, and to look up the network and approximate location fields shown alongside it.
We also read the User-Agent header your browser sends, purely to display the browser and operating system names on the page. It is not stored and not combined with anything else.
What we do not do
- We do not keep our own log of visitor IP addresses.
- We do not build profiles or visitor histories.
- We do not fingerprint your browser, device, canvas, fonts or hardware.
- We do not set tracking cookies. The site sets no cookies at all.
- We run no analytics and no advertising scripts.
- We do not sell, rent or share your data.
- We load no third-party resources — no fonts, no widgets, no pixels. Every file on the page comes from this domain.
Geolocation
Location fields are produced on our own server using local IP geolocation database files. Your IP address is not sent to any external geolocation service, because no external service is involved. The result is approximate by nature: it reflects a general area associated with a network range, not a street address or a device position.
Abuse protection
The JSON endpoint at /api/ip.php is rate limited so that automated use cannot make it unavailable for everyone else. We think you should know exactly how that works, because it is the one thing we keep, even briefly:
- Your IP address is passed through a keyed one-way hash, using a secret that changes every day. The result cannot be reversed back into an address, and yesterday's value cannot be matched to today's.
- Only that hash and a request count are written, to a temporary file.
- The file is deleted once its counting window has passed, within a couple of minutes.
No raw IP address is written to disk by this mechanism, and nothing persists long enough to reconstruct a history of visits.
Server logs
This site runs on shared hosting. Web servers routinely write access and error logs, and our hosting provider operates and controls that logging as part of running the platform. We do not use those logs to build any profile, and we do not add our own logging of visitor addresses on top of it. We mention this because claiming that nothing anywhere is ever recorded would not be accurate, and we would rather be precise than reassuring.
Cookies and local storage
The site sets no cookies, and it writes nothing to local storage or session storage. There is no consent banner because there is nothing to consent to.
Children
The site is a general-purpose reference tool. It does not ask for personal details, does not offer accounts, and collects nothing beyond what is described above, from anyone.
Your rights
Data protection law in several regions gives people rights over personal data held about them, including rights of access and erasure. Because we hold no visitor records, there is nothing for us to retrieve, correct or delete in response to such a request. If you believe we hold something about you, contact us and we will look into it.
Changes to this page
If the site's behaviour changes — for example if a feature ever needed an external service — this page will be updated before that change goes live, and the date at the top will reflect it.
